AVOZINHA VILLA Until 5 Persons.
Golden childhood memories led Teresa and José Sampaio to name the lovely holiday home they have built in the countryside near Luz, 'Horta da Avozinha', 'Granny's Garden'. The name is apt since Horta da Avozinha offers all the joys of a real country childhood: playing hide and seek in the orchard or tag around the palm trees on the springy lawn. Horta da Avozinha's space and comfort, its peace and rural surroundings, plucking a lemon straight off the tree for gin and tonic, or an avocado for a barbecue appetiser is an adult pleasure, just as great as that of languishing all day on a sunbed by the superb pool. If you do have children, you can relax in the knowledge that the garden, orchard and vineyard are enclosed. The villa is pleasantly spacious inside and offers the luxury of two bathrooms for two bedrooms, one pool-side double and one further double with an extra divan. The sitting-dining room and separate kitchen - and even the bathrooms - are equally voluminous. The big, covered veranda is ideal for enjoying a shady open-air lunch by the pool.
The warmly hospitable and charming Sampaios, who come from their home in Lisbon to stay in the adjoining apartment and tend the garden, expect guests to help themselves to everything that's ripe: oranges, peaches and figs as well as lemons and avocados. The orchards are only shared with the occupants of Villa Kimbo (see facing page). Horta da Avozinha is perfect for those who want to venture no further afield than to the seaside villages of Burgau (8 kms) and Luz (4 kms) and to the lovely historic town of Lagos (10 kms) or just to drive into the little village of Espiche, with its sleepy streets, grocers, equally sleepy cafés and excellent restaurant. For those who do want to explore though, Horta da Avozinha is right on the edge of a huge preservation area which encompasses the unspoilt coves of the Algarve's extreme western tip and the wild, remote beaches of the Atlantic coast.
